Better Water From Every Tap in the House
Cleaner, softer water for city and well homes alike, installed by Geek Plumbing Services with CSI and Watersoft equipment.
Whole House Water Filtration & Softener Systems
A whole house water filter treats water right where it enters your home, so the kitchen sink, the shower and the washing machine all get the same upgrade. We install whole-house water filtration and softener systems around Asheville, NC as part of our residential plumbing work, using CSI and Watersoft equipment (other brands on request). Before we recommend anything, though, we want to hear what's going on with your water, and we test it. The right system depends entirely on what's in it and the problem you're trying to solve.
Clues Your Water Is Trying to Tell You Something
- White spots on dishes and crusty faucets: hard water minerals, usually calcium and magnesium.
- Orange or brown stains in sinks, tubs and toilet bowls: a classic sign of iron.
- A rotten-egg smell: often sulfur, especially on well water.
- A pool-like taste or smell: chlorine from city treatment. Safe, but not everyone loves it.
- Cloudy water or grit in aerators: sediment making its way through the pipes.
- Soap that won't lather and skin that feels dry: hardness again.
None of these are emergencies, but they add up: scale wears out water heaters and fixtures, iron stains everything it touches, and nobody enjoys a shower that smells like a science experiment.

How a Whole House Water Filter Works
A whole-house system sits on the main water line, usually close to where it comes into the house. Water passes through one or more stages on its way to the rest of your plumbing. A sediment stage catches sand and grit. A carbon stage takes care of chlorine taste and odor. Specialty media can target problems like iron or sulfur. A bypass valve lets you keep water flowing to the house while the system gets serviced.
The goal is to pick only the stages your water needs, sized for your household, so pressure stays strong and maintenance stays simple.

Water Softener Installation
A filter catches stuff. A softener swaps it. Water softeners use a resin bed to trade the hardness minerals in your water for sodium (or potassium), which is why they need salt. Every so often the softener rinses its resin clean, a process called regeneration, so it needs a drain nearby and an outlet for its control valve. Softened water is easier on water heaters, shower heads and glass shower doors, and soap finally lathers the way it should.
Plenty of homes need both: a filter for sediment, taste or iron, and a softener for hardness. We'll tell you if yours is one of them.

Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water Systems
Reverse osmosis is the one for people who are picky about their drinking water. Water gets squeezed through a membrane so fine that most dissolved minerals can't follow, and what makes it through waits in a little tank under the kitchen sink until you fill a glass from its own skinny faucet. It's a drinking-and-cooking setup. Your shower won't know it's there. Fair warning: RO sends some water down the drain while it works, and the prefilters and membrane wear out and need swapping every so often. We install them, and we're happy to come back for those swaps.
Well Water Treatment for Mountain Homes
Lots of homes outside town run on private wells, and treating well water is up to the homeowner. Depending on the well, that can mean sediment, iron, sulfur smells or hard water, sometimes all at once. A treatment system for a well has to keep up with the well's flow and pressure, so we look at the whole setup, not just the filter. If the real issue is the pressure tank or pressure switch, our well services page is the place to start.
Geek tip: take a look at your shower head. A white crust means hard water minerals; orange or brown staining points to iron. It's a handy clue to mention when you call.
How We Choose the Right System
- 1
We ask questions
City water or a well? What are you noticing, and where?
- 2
We test your water
So the recommendation is based on what's actually in it, not a guess.
- 3
We look at your plumbing
Where the main line comes in, how much space there is, and where a drain and outlet are for a softener.
- 4
We recommend
A filter, a softener or both, with the reasons why and options that fit your budget.
- 5
We install and explain
You'll know how the system works, where the bypass valve is and how to change filters or add salt.
Financing
Ask About Financing
A bigger repair or a replacement doesn't always fit this month's budget. Ask about financing when you call or text (828) 344-5244, or mention it in your Free Estimate request, and we'll walk you through the options.
Filter Changes and Softener Service
Filters clog. That's their whole job, and it's also why a filter nobody has changed in two years isn't doing much. Softeners are easier, but they still need salt in the brine tank and the occasional look at the settings. You can do all of that yourself (we'll show you where everything is), or you can hand it to us. We do filter changes and softener service after the install.
CSI and Watersoft, Plus Other Brands
CSI and Watersoft are our preferred brands for filtration and softening. If you already have a brand in mind, ask us and we'll install that instead.

Water Filtration FAQ
Still have questions? Call us at (828) 344-5244 or browse our full plumbing FAQ.
Do you test the water before recommending a system?
Yes. We test your water first, so the filter, softener or both that we suggest are aimed at what's actually in it.
What's the difference between a water filter and a water softener?
A filter removes things from your water, like sediment, chlorine taste or iron. A softener exchanges the hardness minerals that cause scale and spots. They solve different problems, so some homes need one and some need both.
Can a whole-house system handle well water?
Yes. Well water often brings sediment, iron, sulfur or hardness, and a whole-house setup can be built to deal with the ones your well has. We size it to the well's flow so your pressure doesn't suffer.
Which water filtration brands do you install?
CSI and Watersoft are our preferred brands for whole-house filters and softeners. Other brands are available on request.
How often do whole-house filters need changing?
It depends on the system and your water. Cartridge-style sediment and carbon filters need replacing every few months or so, while larger media tanks clean themselves and last much longer. Heavy sediment or iron means more frequent changes. We'll show you what to watch for, or come change them for you.
Do you install reverse osmosis systems?
Yes. We install reverse osmosis systems for drinking and cooking water, usually under the kitchen sink with their own faucet, and we can take care of the filter and membrane changes afterward.
Will a water softener help my water heater?
It can. Hard water leaves scale inside tanks and tankless heat exchangers, which makes the heater work harder and wear out sooner. Softer water means less buildup and less water heater repair down the road.
