Drain Cleaning & Clog Removal
Slow Drains Cleared, Clogs Explained
Geek Plumbing Services clears slow, gurgling and fully blocked drains, then tells you what caused the clog and how to keep it from coming back.
Drain Cleaning & Clog Removal
Standing ankle-deep in shower water is a lousy way to start the morning. A slow or clogged drain is one of the most common plumbing headaches there is. It's also one of the most fixable. Our drain cleaning service clears the blockage, figures out what caused it and gives you a couple of simple habits so you're not calling us again next month. It's everyday residential plumbing for homes in and around Asheville, NC, and we're available 24/7 when a drain decides to quit at a bad time.
Drain Cleaning for Every Drain in the House
Clogged Shower Drain
Hair plus soap scum equals a slow shower. It builds up a little at a time until one day the water just sits there. We pull the whole clog out of the trap and the line, including the part you can't see.
Kitchen Sink Clogs
Grease, coffee grounds, rice and pasta are the usual troublemakers. Grease goes down as a liquid and hardens in the pipe, catching everything that comes after it. If the clog seems to start at the disposal, our garbage disposal repair page covers what might be going on in there.
Bathroom Sinks and Tubs
Hair, toothpaste and gunk on the pop-up stopper slow these down. Often cleaning the stopper and trap does it; sometimes the clog is farther down and needs a snake.
Toilets
A toilet that clogs every week is usually telling you something about the toilet itself or the line behind it. Head over to toilet repair for the full rundown.

Signs the Clog Is Deeper Than It Looks
One slow sink is a local problem. When several drains act up at once, the blockage is usually farther downstream. Watch for:
- More than one drain running slow at the same time.
- A toilet that gurgles when the sink or tub drains.
- Water backing up into the tub or shower when the toilet flushes.
- A sewer smell coming from a drain.
- A clog that comes back a few days after you plunge it.
Those point to a problem in the main drain or the line out to the street, which is sewer line repair territory. Better to find out early than after a backup.

Why Drains Clog in Asheville Homes
Some of it is just life. Some of it is local. Plenty of older homes around Asheville still have their original drain pipes, and rough, aging pipe walls catch debris faster than smooth new ones. Drain lines that run through a crawl space can sag over time, leaving a low spot where water and gunk settle. And homes on hard or mineral-heavy well water can get scale building up inside the pipes, which narrows them a little more every year.

How We Clear a Clogged Drain
First we ask a few questions and check which drains are affected, because that tells us where the clog is. You'll get a free estimate before we start. Then we clear it, usually by snaking the line, which means feeding a flexible cable into the pipe to break up the blockage and pull it out. After that we run water to make sure everything flows. Then we tell you what we found. Hair? Grease? Something that should never have been flushed? Knowing the cause is half the fix. The work is backed by our limited lifetime workmanship warranty.
Geek tip: a mesh hair catcher in the shower and an old can for bacon grease will prevent more clogs than any bottle from the store.

Drain Cleaning FAQs
Still have questions? Call us at (828) 344-5244 or browse our full plumbing FAQ.
What does drain snaking actually do?
A drain snake (also called an auger) is a long, flexible cable with a cutting or grabbing head on the end. We feed it into the pipe until it reaches the clog, then break the clog up or pull it out. It clears the line itself rather than just pushing the problem farther down.
Are chemical drain cleaners safe for my pipes?
We'd skip them. They're harsh on older pipes and rubber seals, they often only burn a small hole through the clog, and if they don't work, you've got a sink full of caustic water for whoever opens the drain next. A plunger or a call is the safer bet.
Why does my drain keep clogging?
A drain that clogs over and over usually has a reason behind it. It might be buildup coating the pipe, a sag in the line where debris settles, roots getting into the sewer line or a habit that keeps feeding it (grease is the big one). We look for the cause so the fix sticks.
Is a backed-up drain an emergency?
If water or sewage is coming up into the house, yes. Stop running water and flushing toilets, then call or text us. Our emergency plumbing line is open 24/7.
Should I try a plunger first?
Sure, as long as it's the right one. A flat cup plunger works on sinks and tubs, and a flange plunger (the one with the extra rubber sleeve) is made for toilets. Plug the overflow hole on a sink or tub so the pressure goes toward the clog. If a few good tries don't do it, give us a call.
