General
General Plumbing Questions
Are your estimates really free?
Yes. Tell us what's going on with our free estimate form, or call or text us, and there's no charge for the estimate.
Is Geek Plumbing Services licensed and insured?
Yes, we're licensed and insured. We're also women-owned and locally owned. Read more about who we are.
Can I reach a plumber at night or on the weekend?
Yes. We're available 24/7, so call (828) 344-5244 whenever something goes wrong. Our emergency plumbing page covers what to do while you wait.
Is it okay to text instead of calling?
Absolutely. Our number, (828) 344-5244, takes texts, so feel free to send a quick description (and a photo, if it helps). Rather type it all out? Use the form on our contact page.
Which towns do you cover?
We're based in Asheville and serve towns across Western North Carolina, from Hendersonville and Brevard to Weaverville, Waynesville and Black Mountain. See the full list on our service area page.
Do you offer a warranty on your work?
Yes. Our labor and installation come with a limited lifetime workmanship warranty: if we made the mistake, it's ours to fix for as long as you own and live in the home. It covers our workmanship, not manufacturer defects in parts, and it doesn't transfer to a new owner. See the full terms on our approach page.
Do you have plumbing maintenance plans?
We do: Silver, Gold and Platinum monthly plans, with no contract term. Each includes priority scheduling and regular inspections, and Gold and Platinum add a water heater flush. See our maintenance plans.
How are you connected to Geek Construction Team?
We're the plumbing side of Geek Construction Team. On kitchen and bathroom remodels, we handle the plumbing and they take care of the rest of the project.
Home
Home Questions
Do you charge to come out and give an estimate?
Nope. Estimates are free. Use our Free Estimate form or call or text (828) 344-5244.
Is your number really textable?
It is. (828) 344-5244 takes calls and texts, so if a quick message is easier than a phone call, send one.
Are you actually open 24/7?
Really, truly 24/7. Plumbing problems don't keep business hours, so we don't either.
Is a plumber from Geek Plumbing licensed and insured?
Yes. We're licensed and insured, and our labor and installation are backed by a limited lifetime workmanship warranty.
How do I know if you serve my town?
If you're in Asheville or one of the towns listed above, we've got you. Somewhere a little farther out? Get in touch and ask.
Emergency Plumbing
Emergency Plumbing Questions
What counts as a plumbing emergency?
If water is going where it shouldn't and you can't stop it, that's an emergency. So is sewage backing up, no water at all or a water heater that's leaking. A dripping faucet or a slow drain can usually wait for a regular appointment. Not sure? Ask us. We'll be honest about whether it can wait.
What should I do before the plumber arrives?
Shut off the main water valve (or the small valve under the fixture), switch a leaking water heater off at the breaker or its gas control, move valuables out of the way and stay out of standing water near outlets. Then snap a few photos for your insurance company.
My pipes froze. What now?
Open the faucet that pipe feeds so melting water has somewhere to go, then warm the area gently with a hair dryer or a space heater kept at a safe distance. No torches. If the pipe has already split, shut off the main and call us. Once things thaw, a whole home plumbing inspection is a smart way to find other pipes at risk before next winter.
Do you handle sewer backups in the middle of the night?
Yes. We're a true 24-hour plumber, and a backup is an emergency any time. Stop using water in the house (every flush and every shower adds to it), keep people and pets away from the mess and call (828) 344-5244.
Do you handle emergencies for businesses too?
Yes. The same 24/7 number covers offices, shops and rental properties. Our commercial plumbing page has more on how we work with businesses.
Residential
Residential Questions
How do I sign up for a maintenance plan?
Call or text (828) 344-5244, or mention it when you request a free estimate. We'll walk you through Silver, Gold and Platinum, and then you choose. There's no contract term.
How does the Friends & Family discount work?
Just mention Friends & Family when you book and you'll save 15%.
Do you work with property managers and realtors?
All the time. They're a big part of who we serve, along with homeowners, contractors and business owners. Reach out or call (828) 344-5244 to set things up.
Is home plumbing all you do?
Mostly. Homes are about 95% of our work, and the other 5% is businesses. Our commercial plumbing page covers that side.
Commercial
Commercial Questions
What kinds of businesses do you work with?
Business owners, property managers and contractors, mostly at a small-business scale: offices, shops, restaurants and rental buildings. If you're not sure we're the right fit for your building, call and ask. We'll tell you honestly.
Can you schedule plumbing work around our business hours?
Yes. We're available 24/7. Tell us when your doors are open and when they aren't, and we'll plan the visit with that in mind.
Do you work with general contractors?
Yes. Contractors are one of the groups we serve, and since we're the plumbing side of Geek Construction Team, we know how a job site runs.
Do you handle commercial water heaters?
Yes. Water heater repair and replacement is part of our commercial work. Rheem is our preferred brand. Tell us the size and type of unit you have, and we'll let you know what it'll take.
Whole Home Inspections
Whole Home Inspections Questions
What does a whole-home plumbing inspection look at?
The supply side (main shut-off, visible pipes, fixture shut-offs and water pressure), the water heater, every faucet, toilet, shower and tub, the drains and any plumbing you can reach in the crawl space. If the drains point to trouble further down the line, we'll talk through sewer line repair options with you.
How much does a plumbing inspection cost?
It depends on the size of the house and how many bathrooms and fixtures it has. Ask for a free estimate and we'll tell you the price before anything is scheduled, so there are no surprises.
Should I get a plumbing inspection before buying a house?
We think so. A general home inspector covers the whole house in one visit, and plumbing is only one part of that list. A plumber spends the whole visit on the pipes, the water heater and the fixtures, so you know about leaks, old parts or pressure problems while you can still negotiate.
How often should a home's plumbing be inspected?
Once a year is a sensible rhythm for most homes. Older houses, rentals and homes that have had freeze trouble in the past are worth checking more often, and so is any house where something just seems off.
Can you fix the problems an inspection turns up?
Yes. We're plumbers too, so we can quote and handle the plumbing repair work too. You decide what to tackle now and what can wait.
Plumbing Repair & Diagnostics
Plumbing Repair & Diagnostics Questions
How do you diagnose a plumbing problem?
We start with your story, because when and where something happens is half the clue. Then we check the fixture or line involved, look at the parts around it and test until we can point to the cause. You'll hear what we found and why it happened, not just what we replaced.
Will you tell me if something isn't worth repairing?
Yes. If a repair would only buy a few months, we'll say so and walk you through replacement options, too. If a simple fix is all it needs, you'll hear that as well.
Is a small drip really worth a service call?
Usually, yes. A steady drip wastes water around the clock, and it's often an early sign that a washer, cartridge or connection is wearing out. Hidden drips are worse: under a sink or in a crawl space, they can quietly rot wood and grow mold before anyone notices.
What if the problem comes and goes?
Those are our favorite puzzles. Before you call, jot down when it happens: time of day, which fixtures are running, whether it's hot or cold water, and what the weather is doing. Patterns like that point straight at the cause and make the visit quicker.
Do you handle plumbing repairs for businesses?
We do. Most of our work is residential, but business owners and property managers call us for repairs too. Our commercial plumbing page has more.
Water Heaters
Water Heaters Questions
Should I repair or replace my water heater?
If the heater is fairly young and the problem is a part (an element, thermostat, valve or anode rod), repair usually makes sense. If the tank is leaking, rusting from the inside or near the end of its expected life, replacement is usually the better spend. We'll look at the age, the condition and the repair cost, then give you an honest recommendation.
How long does a water heater last?
A tank-style heater commonly lasts somewhere around 8 to 12 years, and a tankless unit often longer. Hard or mineral-heavy water shortens that, and regular flushing helps stretch it. The age on the label tells you a lot.
Is a tankless water heater worth it in Asheville?
For many households, yes: endless hot water, a smaller footprint and less wasted energy. It costs more up front than a tank, and it has to be sized for cold winter water and for how many fixtures you run at once. If those numbers work for your house, it's a great upgrade. If they don't, we'll tell you.
Do you work on gas water heaters?
Yes. We're licensed for gas work, so we repair, replace and install gas tank and gas tankless water heaters, including the gas line that feeds them.
What water heater brands do you install?
Rheem is our preferred brand for tank, tankless and hybrid heaters. If you have another brand in mind, we'll install that instead.
How often should a water heater be flushed?
About once a year for most tank heaters. Homes with hard or iron-heavy water may need it more often, and tankless units need a regular descaling flush too. A whole house water filter or softener cuts down on the buildup in the first place.
Water Filtration Systems
Water Filtration Systems Questions
What's the difference between a water filter and a water softener?
A filter removes things from your water, like sediment, chlorine taste or iron. A softener exchanges the hardness minerals that cause scale and spots. They solve different problems, so some homes need one and some need both.
Can a whole-house system handle well water?
Yes. Well water often brings sediment, iron, sulfur or hardness, and a whole-house setup can be built to deal with the ones your well has. We size it to the well's flow so your pressure doesn't suffer.
Which water filtration brands do you install?
CSI and Watersoft are our preferred brands for whole-house filters and softeners. Other brands are available on request.
How often do whole-house filters need changing?
It depends on the system and your water. Cartridge-style sediment and carbon filters need replacing every few months or so, while larger media tanks clean themselves and last much longer. Heavy sediment or iron means more frequent changes. We'll show you what to watch for, or come change them for you.
Do you install reverse osmosis systems?
Yes. We install reverse osmosis systems for drinking and cooking water, usually under the kitchen sink with their own faucet, and we can take care of the filter and membrane changes afterward.
Will a water softener help my water heater?
It can. Hard water leaves scale inside tanks and tankless heat exchangers, which makes the heater work harder and wear out sooner. Softer water means less buildup and less water heater repair down the road.
Toilet Repair & Replacement
Toilet Repair & Replacement Questions
Why does my toilet keep running?
Most of the time it's the flapper or the fill valve. Here's a quick test: add a few drops of food coloring to the tank and wait without flushing. If color shows up in the bowl, the flapper is leaking. If the tank water is spilling into the overflow tube, it's the fill valve or the water level.
Why is my toilet leaking at the base?
Sometimes it isn't a leak at all. In humid weather, a cold tank can sweat and drip onto the floor. If the water appears after flushing, or the toilet rocks, the wax ring under it has probably failed and the toilet needs to be reset.
Is it better to repair or replace a toilet?
If the porcelain is in good shape, repairing the parts inside is usually the smart move. Cracks, constant repairs or a very old, water-hungry model are good reasons to replace it instead. We'll give you an honest call either way.
Can a running toilet really raise my water bill?
It can, by more than you'd expect. A constantly running toilet pours clean water down the drain day and night, and a new flapper or fill valve costs far less than the water it wastes.
What should I do if my toilet overflows?
Stop the water first. Press the flapper down inside the tank and turn the shut-off valve behind the toilet clockwise. If the water won't stop, sewage is coming up, or other drains are backing up too, call our emergency plumbing line right away. We answer 24/7.
Leaky Pipe Repair
Leaky Pipe Repair Questions
How do you find a leak inside a wall?
We check the meter, shut off fixtures one by one and follow the water's path along pipes and framing. The goal is to know where the leak is before we open anything, so any hole we make stays small.
Can you repair PEX, copper and galvanized pipes?
Yes. Those are the materials we see most in homes around Asheville, and a leaky section of any of them can be repaired. Where an old galvanized or copper line is failing in more than one spot, we'll explain your options honestly.
What should I do if a pipe freezes?
Open the faucet it feeds so melting water has somewhere to go, and warm the area gently with a space heater or hair dryer, never an open flame. If the pipe has split, close the main shut-off valve right away and call or text (828) 344-5244. We answer 24/7.
Do you fix leaks in crawl spaces?
All the time. Crawl spaces are where a lot of supply and drain lines run in Western North Carolina homes, and we'll point out anything else down there that looks like trouble.
Drain Cleaning & Clog Removal
Drain Cleaning & Clog Removal Questions
What does drain snaking actually do?
A drain snake (also called an auger) is a long, flexible cable with a cutting or grabbing head on the end. We feed it into the pipe until it reaches the clog, then break the clog up or pull it out. It clears the line itself rather than just pushing the problem farther down.
Are chemical drain cleaners safe for my pipes?
We'd skip them. They're harsh on older pipes and rubber seals, they often only burn a small hole through the clog, and if they don't work, you've got a sink full of caustic water for whoever opens the drain next. A plunger or a call is the safer bet.
Why does my drain keep clogging?
A drain that clogs over and over usually has a reason behind it. It might be buildup coating the pipe, a sag in the line where debris settles, roots getting into the sewer line or a habit that keeps feeding it (grease is the big one). We look for the cause so the fix sticks.
Is a backed-up drain an emergency?
If water or sewage is coming up into the house, yes. Stop running water and flushing toilets, then call or text us. Our emergency plumbing line is open 24/7.
Should I try a plunger first?
Sure, as long as it's the right one. A flat cup plunger works on sinks and tubs, and a flange plunger (the one with the extra rubber sleeve) is made for toilets. Plug the overflow hole on a sink or tub so the pressure goes toward the clog. If a few good tries don't do it, give us a call.
Sewers
Sewers Questions
Is it a clogged drain or a sewer line problem?
If one fixture is slow, it's probably a clog in that drain, and regular drain cleaning will handle it. If several fixtures back up together, or the lowest drain in the house fills when you flush, the problem is likely in the main sewer line.
Can tree roots really break a sewer pipe?
They can. Roots usually get in through a small gap at a joint, then keep growing. Over time they can widen cracks, shift sections of pipe and block the line completely. Catching root problems early keeps the repair smaller.
What should I do if sewage backs up into my house?
Stop using water right away. No flushing, no showers, no laundry. Keep kids and pets away from the area, and call or text (828) 344-5244. A sewage backup is an emergency plumbing situation, and we answer 24/7.
Why does my house smell like sewer only sometimes?
Check for a drain nobody uses, like a guest shower or a floor drain. Every drain has a trap that holds a little water to block sewer gas, and when that water evaporates, the smell gets in. Run water in it for a minute. If the smell keeps coming back, something else is going on and we should take a look.
Do you work on sewer lines for businesses?
Yes. Restaurants, offices and rental buildings get sewer trouble too, and a backup there affects a lot of people at once. Our commercial plumbing page covers how we work with business owners and property managers.
Faucet Repair & Replacement
Faucet Repair & Replacement Questions
Which faucet should I pick?
Start with how you use the sink and how many holes your counter or sink has. From there it's finish, handle style and budget. Tell us what you're spending and we'll suggest options that fit, from simple and sturdy to a little fancier.
Can you replace a shower cartridge or the whole valve?
Yes, both. A cartridge swap fixes most temperature and dripping problems. If the valve body is worn out or you're changing styles, we replace the valve too.
Why does my faucet drip even when it's turned off all the way?
Something inside isn't sealing anymore. In older two-handle faucets that's usually a rubber washer or seat; in single-handle faucets it's typically the cartridge or O-rings. Cranking the handle harder won't fix it and can wear the parts faster.
Do you fix outdoor faucets and hose bibs?
We do. Dripping spigots, handles that won't turn, freeze-damaged hose bibs and swaps to frost-free models are all on the list.
Why is water leaking around the faucet handle?
That's usually a worn O-ring or packing around the stem, or a loose part under the handle. It's a common repair and usually doesn't mean you need a new faucet.
Well Services
Well Services Questions
Why does my well pump keep turning on and off?
That's called short cycling. The most common cause is a pressure tank that's lost its air charge, but a failing pressure switch or a leak somewhere in the system can do it too. It's worth fixing soon, because all that starting and stopping wears out the pump.
How long does a well pump last?
It depends on how hard it works. Sediment, water use and short cycling all play a part, so fixing a waterlogged tank early is one of the easiest ways to help a pump go the distance.
Why is air spitting out of my faucets?
Sputtering faucets usually mean air is getting into the system. A dropping water level in the well, a leak in the pipe between the pump and the house or a failing check valve are common causes. If it starts suddenly, give us a call before the pump runs dry.
Should I do anything to my well system before winter?
Make sure the pressure tank, switch and any exposed pipes stay above freezing or are insulated. A well house or crawl space with a broken vent can freeze in a mountain cold snap.
Is losing all water from my well an emergency?
For most households, yes. No water means no flushing, no washing and no cooking. Call or text us any time, and see our emergency plumbing page for what to do while you wait.
Sump Pump Services
Sump Pump Services Questions
Do I need a sump pump in a crawl space?
Not every crawl space does. If yours stays dry all year, you may never need one. Standing water, mud that never dries out or water marks on the foundation walls after storms are signs a sump pump would help. We'll take a look and give you a straight answer.
How often should I test my sump pump?
Every few months, and again before any big storm in the forecast. Pour water into the pit and make sure the pump turns on, empties it and shuts off. While you're at it, check that the discharge outlet outside isn't buried in leaves, mulch or ice.
Why is my sump pump running constantly?
The usual suspects are a stuck float switch, a check valve letting water flow back into the pit, a pump that's too small for the water coming in, or a high water table after a wet stretch. If it runs in dry weather too, a leak may be feeding the pit. Call or text us and we'll track it down.
Is a sump pump the same as a well pump?
Nope. A sump pump moves unwanted water out from under your house. A well pump pulls drinking water up from your well and into your pipes. Different jobs, different equipment, and we work on both. Here's more about our well services.
Where should sump pump water go?
Away from the house, and ideally downhill. If the discharge line empties too close to the foundation, the water soaks right back into the soil and ends up in the pit again. On a sloped lot that takes a little planning, which is exactly the kind of puzzle we enjoy.
Garbage Disposals
Garbage Disposals Questions
Why is my garbage disposal humming?
Humming almost always means the motor is getting power but the plate can't turn, usually because something is jammed inside. Cut the power, free the jam with the hex wrench from underneath, press the reset button and try again. If it spins freely and still just hums, give us a call.
What shouldn't go down a garbage disposal?
Grease and cooking oil, coffee grounds, eggshells, pasta and rice (they swell), bones, fruit pits and stringy stuff like celery, corn husks and onion skins. Anything that isn't food stays out too. Run cold water while it grinds and for a few seconds after.
Can a leaking disposal be fixed?
Sometimes. A leak at the sink flange or the drain connection usually comes down to a seal or a loose fitting we can fix. Water dripping from the bottom of the unit itself usually means the internal seals are done, and that means a new disposal.
Is it safe to reach into a garbage disposal?
No, even with the switch off. Use tongs or pliers to pull out anything stuck, and cut the power first. If you can't see what's jamming it, let us take a look.
Why does my disposal smell?
Food bits love to hide under the rubber splash guard and inside the chamber. Scrub the underside of the guard and run some ice cubes through to knock the gunk loose. If the smell sticks around, there may be a partial clog further down the line, and our drain cleaning service can clear it.
Water Pressure Solutions
Water Pressure Solutions Questions
Does my house have a water pressure regulator?
If you're on city water, there's a good chance you do. Look near the main shut-off for a bell-shaped brass valve with an adjusting screw on top. Homes on a private well usually don't have one, because the well's pressure switch sets the range instead.
Why did my water pressure drop all of a sudden?
A sudden drop can mean a regulator that failed, a well pump that quit, a break on the city's side or a burst pipe in your home. Ask a neighbor if their water's fine too. If you hear running water or see it where it shouldn't be, shut off the main and call our emergency plumbing line.
Can high water pressure damage my plumbing?
Yes. Over time, too much pressure strains pipe joints, faucet cartridges, toilet fill valves, supply hoses and your water heater. It's one of those problems that doesn't feel like a problem until something gives out.
Will a new showerhead fix poor water pressure?
It can, if the old one is clogged with mineral buildup. Try soaking it in vinegar first. If the whole house is weak, though, a new showerhead won't fix the real issue.
Is low pressure on a well something you can fix?
Weak or up-and-down pressure on a well is part of our well services. It usually traces back to the pump, the pressure switch or the pressure tank, and we'll figure out which one is to blame before suggesting a fix.
Kitchen & Bathroom Remodeling
Kitchen & Bathroom Remodeling Questions
What plumbing does a bathroom remodel need?
It depends on how much is changing. Keeping the layout and swapping fixtures may only take new valves, supply lines and connections. Moving the toilet, shower or vanity means new rough-in work for drains, vents and supply lines. We'll walk through your plan and tell you which camp you're in.
Can you move a toilet or shower to a different spot?
Often, yes. The real question is how the drain gets there: a toilet needs a large drain with the right slope and a vent. In a home over a crawl space, getting under the floor is usually easier than in one built on a slab. We'll look and tell you what it takes.
Who handles the rest of the remodel?
Geek Construction Team, our sister company, handles the remodel itself. We're the plumbing side of the same company, so you can bring both of us in or call us for just the plumbing.
Can I pick out my own fixtures?
Tell us what you have in mind before the rough-in starts. Valve heights, drain positions and supply connections depend on the exact model, so knowing the fixture early saves headaches later.
Can you add a sink to a kitchen island?
Island sinks take more planning than a sink on a wall, because there's no wall to run a vent up. The drain has to go down through the floor and connect to your system with a vent setup that meets code. We'll look at what's under your floor and explain the options.
