Sewer Smells and Backups, Traced to the Source
Backups, slow drains all over the house or that unmistakable smell: call Geek Plumbing Services to find what's wrong with the line and walk through the fix together.
Sewer Line Repair & Replacement
Your sewer line is the one pipe nobody thinks about until it stops working. It carries everything from every drain and toilet in the house out to the city sewer, and when it cracks, sags or fills with roots, the whole house feels it. We handle sewer line repair and replacement for residential plumbing customers around Asheville, NC, and we start every job by finding out exactly what's going on before talking about fixes.
Signs Your Sewer Line Needs Attention
- Several drains running slow at once, especially on the lowest floor.
- Toilets that gurgle or bubble when you run the sink or washing machine.
- Water backing up into a tub, shower or floor drain.
- A sewage smell inside the house or out in the yard.
- A soggy patch of lawn, or one strip of grass that's suspiciously greener than the rest.
One of these on its own might be a simple clog. Two or three together usually means the main line.

What Goes Wrong With Sewer Lines
Tree roots are the classic culprit. They go looking for water, find a tiny gap at a pipe joint and grow right in, catching paper and debris until the line chokes. Older pipes crack and shift with age. Soil settles, leaving a sag (plumbers call it a belly) where waste sits instead of flowing. And plenty of trouble is self-inflicted. Grease, wipes and paper towels don't break down the way toilet paper does.
Geek tip: "flushable" wipes aren't. They hold together long after they leave the toilet and love to snag on roots and rough spots in a sewer line. Toss them in the trash instead.

Trees, Hills and Older Homes: Sewer Lines Around Asheville
Western North Carolina has a lot of big trees. Big trees have big roots. Add hillside lots where soil shifts and older neighborhoods with original sewer pipe, and you get a lot of tired lines. None of that means yours is failing, but it's why we take a slow drain or a sewer smell seriously instead of just clearing it and leaving.

Sewer Line Repair or Sewer Line Replacement?
If the damage is in one spot, like a cracked joint or a short section crushed by a root, repairing that piece is often the sensible move. If the pipe is failing along its length, patching it again and again costs more in the long run than replacing the line. We'll lay out both options when both make sense, with honest pros, cons and a free estimate, and we'll match the materials to your budget. You make the call.
Sewer Cleanouts, Explained
A sewer cleanout is a capped pipe, usually just outside the house or in the crawl space, that gives a plumber direct access to the main line. When there's a backup, a cleanout means we can get to the problem without pulling a toilet. Don't know where yours is? Ask us next time we're out and we'll show you.

What Our Customers Say
Sewer Line Questions
Still have questions? Call us at (828) 344-5244 or browse our full plumbing FAQ.
Is it a clogged drain or a sewer line problem?
If one fixture is slow, it's probably a clog in that drain, and regular drain cleaning will handle it. If several fixtures back up together, or the lowest drain in the house fills when you flush, the problem is likely in the main sewer line.
Can tree roots really break a sewer pipe?
They can. Roots usually get in through a small gap at a joint, then keep growing. Over time they can widen cracks, shift sections of pipe and block the line completely. Catching root problems early keeps the repair smaller.
What should I do if sewage backs up into my house?
Stop using water right away. No flushing, no showers, no laundry. Keep kids and pets away from the area, and call or text (828) 344-5244. A sewage backup is an emergency plumbing situation, and we answer 24/7.
Why does my house smell like sewer only sometimes?
Check for a drain nobody uses, like a guest shower or a floor drain. Every drain has a trap that holds a little water to block sewer gas, and when that water evaporates, the smell gets in. Run water in it for a minute. If the smell keeps coming back, something else is going on and we should take a look.
Do you work on sewer lines for businesses?
Yes. Restaurants, offices and rental buildings get sewer trouble too, and a backup there affects a lot of people at once. Our commercial plumbing page covers how we work with business owners and property managers.
