No Water From the Well? Let's Get It Flowing

Out past the city water lines, Geek Plumbing Services keeps home wells running, from a pump that won't kick on to pressure that rises and falls.

Well Pump Repair & Well Services

Lots of homes around Asheville and up in the surrounding hills run on a private well. That's great until the pump quits and every faucet, shower and toilet in the house quits with it. Our well pump repair service finds out why the water stopped (or started acting strange) and gets it flowing again. It's part of the residential plumbing we do across Western North Carolina, and since a dry house can't wait, we're reachable 24/7.

Well Pump Repair: Signs Something's Off

Wells don't usually fail all at once. They drop hints first:

  • No water at all, or only a trickle
  • Faucets that sputter and spit air
  • Pressure that's strong one minute and weak the next
  • A pump that runs nonstop, or clicks on and off every few seconds
  • Cloudy, sandy or muddy water that wasn't there before
  • A breaker for the well pump that keeps tripping

Pump, Pressure Switch or Pressure Tank? How to Tell

A home well system has three main players, and when something goes wrong, the trick is figuring out which one is causing it.

The Well Pump

Most homes have a submersible pump down in the well that pushes water up to the house. A worn pump means low or no water, or a pump that runs without building pressure.

The Well Pump Pressure Switch

This little box near the tank tells the pump when to turn on and off. Burned contacts or a clogged sensing tube can keep the pump from starting or stopping. Chattering or clicking is a common clue.

The Well Pressure Tank

The tank stores water under pressure so the pump doesn't have to start every time you open a tap. If it loses its air charge (plumbers call that waterlogged), the pump short-cycles, turning on and off rapidly, which wears it out early.

Sometimes it is the pump. Sometimes it's a part that costs a lot less. We figure out which before you spend a dime.

No Water at All? Start Here

Check the breaker labeled for the well pump. If it's tripped, reset it once. If it trips again, leave it off, because that's the system telling you something is wrong, and repeated resets can damage the pump. Then look at the pressure gauge near your tank: if it reads zero, the pump isn't delivering water. Call or text (828) 344-5244 and we'll take it from there.

Geek tip: next time your water is working fine, snap a photo of the pressure gauge by your tank. If pressure ever feels off, you'll have a normal reading to compare against, and that helps us diagnose the problem faster.

Well Pump Replacement

When a pump is worn out or repairs stop making sense, replacement is the honest answer. We'll explain why and go over options sized to your home and budget. If the switch or tank is near the end of its life too, we'll mention it so you can decide whether to handle everything at once.

Hard Water, Iron and Your Well

Well water in the mountains often carries minerals with it. Orange stains in the tub, crusty white buildup on faucets or a metallic taste are common signs of iron or hard water. Those minerals are tough on fixtures and appliances, and they can clog the little screens and cartridges throughout your plumbing. A whole-house filter or softener from CSI or Watersoft can help, and our water filtration page explains the options.

What to Expect When We Come Out

We start by listening: what changed, and when. Then we check the system from the breaker to the tank to the faucet and explain what we found in plain English, with options and a free estimate. Once you pick a direction, we do the work with budget-fit materials, backed by our limited lifetime workmanship warranty. Pressure acting up on city water instead of a well? That's a different puzzle, covered on our low water pressure page.

What Our Customers Say

Well Pump Questions

Still have questions? Call us at (828) 344-5244 or browse our full plumbing FAQ.

Why does my well pump keep turning on and off?

That's called short cycling. The most common cause is a pressure tank that's lost its air charge, but a failing pressure switch or a leak somewhere in the system can do it too. It's worth fixing soon, because all that starting and stopping wears out the pump.

How long does a well pump last?

It depends on how hard it works. Sediment, water use and short cycling all play a part, so fixing a waterlogged tank early is one of the easiest ways to help a pump go the distance.

Why is air spitting out of my faucets?

Sputtering faucets usually mean air is getting into the system. A dropping water level in the well, a leak in the pipe between the pump and the house or a failing check valve are common causes. If it starts suddenly, give us a call before the pump runs dry.

Should I do anything to my well system before winter?

Make sure the pressure tank, switch and any exposed pipes stay above freezing or are insulated. A well house or crawl space with a broken vent can freeze in a mountain cold snap.

Is losing all water from my well an emergency?

For most households, yes. No water means no flushing, no washing and no cooking. Call or text us any time, and see our emergency plumbing page for what to do while you wait.
