Water under the house is a problem that grows quietly. Geek Plumbing Services installs and repairs sump pumps for crawl spaces and basements around Asheville, 24/7.
Sump Pump Installation & Repair
Puddles in the crawl space after every hard rain? A sump pump is usually the fix, and Geek Plumbing Services handles sump pump installation and repair for homes in Asheville, NC and across Western North Carolina. We figure out where the water is coming from, set up a pump that can keep up with it, and get your old one working again when it stops pulling its weight. It's one of the residential plumbing services we offer around the clock, explained in plain English the whole way through.
Why Crawl Spaces Around Here Get Wet
Most homes in our corner of the mountains sit over a crawl space instead of a full basement, and plenty are built into a hillside. When rain runs down the slope, the ground stays soaked for days or snowmelt sinks into the soil, all that water heads for the lowest spot it can find. Too often, that spot is under your floor.
It doesn't take a flood to cause trouble. A few inches of standing water, or dirt that never dries out, brings musty smells, soggy insulation, damp framing and a warm welcome for mold and bugs.

How a Sump Pump Works
The setup is simple. A pit, called the sump basin, sits at the low point of the crawl space or basement. As water collects, a float rises and switches the pump on. The pump pushes the water up through a discharge line and out away from the house, and a check valve on that line keeps it from sliding right back into the pit when the pump shuts off. Small machine, big job.

Crawl Space Sump Pump Installation
A good install comes down to details you'll never see once we're done. We look at where water collects, how much shows up after a storm and where the discharge can go without draining back toward your foundation. Then we set the basin, talk through pump options that fit the job and your budget, run the discharge line and fill the pit to watch the pump cycle. Basement instead of a crawl space? Same idea.

Sump Pump Repair & Replacement
Sump pumps have a habit of failing quietly, right before the storm you needed them for. These are the problems we run into most:
- A stuck float switch. The float gets hung up on the side of the basin or tangled in its own cord, so the pump never turns on (or never turns off).
- A bad check valve. Water drains back into the pit after every cycle, so the pump runs on and off over and over.
- A clogged intake or blocked discharge line. Silt and gravel choke the pump, or a crushed or frozen line leaves the water nowhere to go.
- A tired motor. Humming without pumping, grinding, rattling or a pump that runs hot usually means it's time for a new one.
We'll tell you honestly whether a part swap gets you back in business or the pump has earned its retirement.
Geek tip: every few months, pour a bucket of water into the sump pit. The float should rise, the pump should kick on and the water should disappear. If nothing happens, you just found the problem before the rain did.
When It's More Than a Pump Problem
Sometimes water under the house has nothing to do with rain. If the crawl space is wet in dry weather too, a leaking supply line may be the culprit, and that same leak can be why your shower upstairs has gone weak. Tracing it is part of our water pressure solutions.

Sump Pump Questions We Hear a Lot
Still have questions? Call us at (828) 344-5244 or browse our full plumbing FAQ.
Do I need a sump pump in a crawl space?
Not every crawl space does. If yours stays dry all year, you may never need one. Standing water, mud that never dries out or water marks on the foundation walls after storms are signs a sump pump would help. We'll take a look and give you a straight answer.
How often should I test my sump pump?
Every few months, and again before any big storm in the forecast. Pour water into the pit and make sure the pump turns on, empties it and shuts off. While you're at it, check that the discharge outlet outside isn't buried in leaves, mulch or ice.
Why is my sump pump running constantly?
The usual suspects are a stuck float switch, a check valve letting water flow back into the pit, a pump that's too small for the water coming in, or a high water table after a wet stretch. If it runs in dry weather too, a leak may be feeding the pit. Call or text us and we'll track it down.
Is a sump pump the same as a well pump?
Nope. A sump pump moves unwanted water out from under your house. A well pump pulls drinking water up from your well and into your pipes. Different jobs, different equipment, and we work on both. Here's more about our well services.
Where should sump pump water go?
Away from the house, and ideally downhill. If the discharge line empties too close to the foundation, the water soaks right back into the soil and ends up in the pit again. On a sloped lot that takes a little planning, which is exactly the kind of puzzle we enjoy.
